Diving a Bike

Today Emma's gym class gets to swim in the pool. On the drive to school she told me they're going to teach them how to dive.

"I think I already know how to dive, I just get nervous," she told me.

"You do know how, and once you get comfortable with it you'll never be uncomfortable with it again. It's sorta like riding a bike, you know?"

There was a long silence in the car.

"I don't know how to ride a bike."

When she said it, it startled a laugh out of me. "Yeah, bad analogy. Sorry about that."

  1. BUAHAHAHAAH. Nice one, Jim. ;-) Next you'll be telling her that, just like sex, there's no such thing as bad pizza.

    1. It's funny. We were in the car LAST NIGHT and I told her there was no such thing as bad pizza, and she was like, "Except that fund raiser pizza we got. That was bad."

And I agreed. But I thought of you.

  2. Wait, she doesn't know how to ride a bike? When do you teach her that? Teach her to ride a bike, Jim! It's important!

    1. I know, right? She's missing her best bike-riding years! THEY ARE SLIPPING AWAY AS I AM TYPING.

  3. She can't ride her bike off a diving board until she learns how to ride a bike! Then, when she learns something later, you can say "it's just like riding a bike off a diving board." Just trying to spice things up.

  5. I'm not getting your posts, either! I thought yesterday that I hadn't read anything from you in awhile so I thought I'd check to make sure and for some reason your posts aren't coming to my feed. WTF? I feel Emma's pain. I rode on the back of my mother's bike in a child seat until my knees touched my chin and didn't learn how to dive until college. Those things are tricky. And scary.

  6. Okay, I need to stop reading through your archives or it is going to be a very unproductive day at work. I started reading what I assume is an old blog of your's also, and I love it too! I tried to comment but it said my comment was marked as spam. Must stop blogging activities while at work....

    1. Hmm, I wonder why? What blog. . . the live journal one? I don't even know if that one ACCEPTS comments. The last thing I wrote in it was 2010. I pulled the old chihuahua story from their and dusted it off in here.

  7. I hate that saying.
I'm not very good on a bike. I can go in a straight line, but I have the turning circle of an F-16. Whenever someone says something is just like riding a bike, I just imagine I'm going to hit it head-on and return said bike to its owner with the wheel at a new and jaunty angle.
    :/
